Qasr Al Watan (Arabic: قَصْر ٱلْوَطَن, meaning "Palace of the Nation") is the Presidential Palace of the United Arab Emirates and one of Abu Dhabi's most extraordinary cultural landmarks. Unlike most palaces in the world that remain closed to the public, Qasr Al Watan opened its grand doors to visitors in March 2019 by decree of the UAE President — offering a rare, first-of-its-kind glimpse into the nation's governance, heritage, and architectural mastery.
Completed in 2017, the palace is not a residential space but an active centre of statecraft, hosting UAE Cabinet meetings, Federal Supreme Council sessions, diplomatic receptions, and international summits. Its gleaming white facade, sweeping domes, and intricate geometry make it one of the most photographed buildings in the entire Arabian Gulf.
Architecture & Design
Every detail of Qasr Al Watan is a tribute to Arabian artistry. The exterior is clad in granite and limestone, while the interiors feature over 5,000 distinct geometric patterns, doors crafted with 23-carat French gold leaf, and marble floors imported from across the world. The palace's three defining colours — blue for the Arabian Gulf, yellow for the desert sands, and white for purity and peace — are woven seamlessly into every room through intricate mosaic tilework and carved stone.
The centrepiece is the Great Hall, home to one of the largest central domes in the world, rising nearly 200 feet (60 metres) above the ground and spanning over 120 feet (37 metres) wide. Standing beneath it is a genuinely humbling experience.
What to Explore Inside
The Great Hall The beating heart of the palace. Soaring arches, mirrored cubes, glass panels, and hand-carved marble columns converge in a space that defines the scale and ambition of the entire project. The central dome is the highlight of every visit.
House of Knowledge A celebration of the Arab world's long tradition of scholarship. This wing houses over 50,000 books and manuscripts documenting the cultural, social, and political history of the UAE and the wider Arab world, alongside the iconic Power of Words — a large calligraphic sculpture paying tribute to UAE founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Spirit of Collaboration The UAE's active diplomatic chamber, where the Federal Supreme Council, the Arab League, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) convene. Its iconic circular design and breathtaking chandelier — engineered to absorb sound — symbolise the UAE's commitment to equality and collective progress. Visitors can learn about the protocols of international diplomacy in this remarkable room.
Presidential Banquet Hall A 300-seat state dining hall set with 149,000 hand-engraved pieces of fine bone china tableware. Visitors can discover the customs, protocols, and cuisine served to world leaders and visiting dignitaries.
Presidential Gifts Room An extraordinary collection of gifts presented to the UAE by visiting heads of state, including a Swiss quartz rock estimated to be 20 million years old, Japanese Samurai armour, and ceremonial falcon masks from Germany.
Palace in Motion – The Evening Light Show After sundown, the exterior of Qasr Al Watan transforms into a canvas for one of the region's most spectacular light and sound shows. The show runs in three breathtaking acts, narrating the UAE's journey through its heritage and vision for the future. Shows begin every 30 minutes after sunset, with the final entry taken 30 minutes before the last show.
