Overview

Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE's great outdoors — a dramatic emirate where the jagged Hajar Mountains plunge down to golden desert dunes and pristine beaches along a 64-kilometre coastline. Known as RAK, it offers some of the most exhilarating adventures in the region: ride the world's fastest zip line down Jebel Jais — the UAE's highest peak — paraglide over ancient wadis, or explore 7,000 years of continuous human settlement at archaeological sites that predate any other emirate. The old town of Al Qawasim retains a coastal heritage of pearl diving and dhow building, while the Dhayah Fort rises above palm groves on a rocky outcrop with sweeping views across the Northern Emirates. Quieter and more affordable than its neighbours, RAK rewards travellers who venture beyond the glitz — with wild landscapes, warm Gulf waters, and a genuine sense of discovery that is increasingly rare in the UAE.

History

Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE's most historically rich emirate, with settlements dating back 7,000 years. It was once a major centre of the Dilmun trading civilisation and later became a powerful maritime emirate before joining the UAE federation in 1972.
