Burj Khalifa (Arabic: برج خليفة, meaning "Khalifa Tower") is the world's tallest building and one of the most iconic structures ever created by human hands. Soaring to a staggering 828 metres (2,717 feet) across 163 floors, it stands at the heart of Downtown Dubai as the undisputed centrepiece of the UAE's most celebrated skyline. Designed by the American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and developed by Emaar Properties, the Burj Khalifa officially opened on 4 January 2010 — and nearly two decades later, it remains the tallest building on Earth.
More than a record-breaking feat of engineering, the Burj Khalifa is a living destination — home to world-class observation decks, a Michelin-recognised restaurant, luxury residences, premium offices, and a six-star hotel. A visit here is not just sightseeing; it is one of the defining experiences of modern travel.
Architecture & Design
The Burj Khalifa's design draws direct inspiration from the Hymenocallis desert flower, whose three-petal structure is echoed in the tower's distinctive Y-shaped footprint. This triaxial geometry allows each of the three wings to support and stabilise the others, enabling the tower to reach extraordinary heights with remarkable structural integrity.
The building contains over 330,000 m³ of concrete, 39,000 tonnes of steel rebar, and 103,000 m²eof glass on its façade. Its spire — a steel pinnacle extending 200 metres above the highest occupied floor — gives the tower its unmistakable silhouette. On a clear day, the Burj Khalifa can be seen from over 95 kilometres away.
