Our Overview

Set on the cultural shores of Saadiyat Island, the Zayed National Museum is poised to become the UAE’s most iconic landmark—a tribute to the legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the nation. Designed by the world-renowned Foster + Partners and led by architect Lord Norman Foster, this architectural marvel is scheduled to open its doors in 2025 as the crown jewel of Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District.

Inspired Design, Grounded in Legacy

The museum’s striking silhouette features five towering steel structures, shaped like falcon feathers—an homage to Sheikh Zayed’s deep connection to falconry and a powerful symbol of the UAE’s rise. These “wings” emerge from a 30-metre-high landscaped mound that reflects the nation’s desert landscapes, seamlessly blending tradition with futuristic vision.

Architecture That Breathes

The falcon-inspired towers aren’t just a visual statement—they’re functional thermal chimneys designed to promote natural airflow. Hot air rises through the towers, while cooler air is funneled underground and into the building’s core. This innovative approach to passive climate control minimizes the need for conventional air conditioning, underscoring the museum’s commitment to sustainability.

Stories Told Through Space

Spanning 66,000 square metres, the museum houses six permanent galleries, each offering an immersive journey through Emirati history and culture. Highlights include:

  • Sheikh Zayed & Nation Building: featuring personal belongings, rare photographs, and historical currency.
  • Landscapes & Life, People & Heritage, History & Society, Science & Learning, Faith & Islam, and Falconry & Conservation: revealing the many layers of Emirati identity—from ancient pearl divers to scientific pioneers

Among its most captivating exhibits is an 18-metre “Magan Boat,” painstakingly recreated using Bronze Age methods and launched in Gulf waters, along with 8,000-year-old pearls, rare Abbasid artifacts, and early tools of medicine and trade.

A Vision for the Future

Operated by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the museum is designed to be more than a gallery—it’s a living cultural centre. From performance halls and education hubs to inclusive visitor experiences, it aims to inspire, inform, and engage audiences of all ages.

Once open, the Zayed National Museum will stand proudly alongside the Louvre and the upcoming Guggenheim, reaffirming Abu Dhabi’s status as a global cultural capital and celebrating the enduring spirit of the UAE.
